Which Restaurant Foods Make GLP-1 Nausea Worse?

Greasy, fried, very sweet and oversized dishes, fizzy drinks, alcohol and spicy food can worsen GLP-1 nausea. Menu words to spot and what to order instead.

The short answer

The restaurant foods most likely to make GLP-1 nausea worse are greasy and fried dishes, rich cream or cheese sauces, very sweet desserts and drinks, oversized portions, carbonated drinks, alcohol and spicy food. Menu words like fried, crispy, creamy, smothered, loaded and jumbo are the warning signs. Smaller grilled, baked or steamed dishes with broth-based soups and plain sides are gentler choices.

You're halfway through a basket of wings when it hits: that heavy, queasy feeling that tells you dinner was a mistake. On Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound, nausea is one of the most common side effects, and restaurant food, with its big portions, rich sauces and deep fryers, can make it worse.

You can't control everything about how your body responds, but you can control what you order. Here's which foods tend to cause trouble, the menu words that flag them, and what to order instead. How common is nausea on GLP-1 medications?#

Nausea is the most common side effect reported in GLP-1 trials. The FDA prescribing information gives these rates compared with placebo:

Medication Nausea on the drug Nausea on placebo
Wegovy (semaglutide), adults with obesity or overweight 44% 16%
Zepbound (tirzepatide), weight management trials 25 to 29% 8%
Mounjaro (tirzepatide), type 2 diabetes trials 12 to 18% 4%

The labels explain part of the reason: both semaglutide and tirzepatide delay gastric emptying, so food stays in your stomach longer. The Cleveland Clinic puts it simply: greasy or high-fat food can cause indigestion, nausea, vomiting or heartburn because it now sits in your stomach for longer.

Which restaurant foods make GLP-1 nausea worse?#

Greasy and fried food, rich sauces, very sweet items, big portions, fizzy drinks, alcohol and spicy dishes are the usual triggers. Each one is named by at least one major medical source as something to limit when GI side effects show up.

Trigger Why it can make nausea worse Menu words that signal it Order instead
Greasy and fried food Fat digests slowly and sits longer in a slowed stomach Fried, crispy, battered, tempura, breaded, golden Grilled, baked, steamed, poached, seared
Rich cream, butter and cheese sauces High fat in a small volume Creamy, alfredo, cheesy, smothered, au gratin, beurre blanc Tomato or broth-based sauce, sauce on the side
Very sweet food and drinks Sugary drinks and desserts can upset the stomach Glazed, candied, frosted, milkshake, sweet tea Fruit, unsweetened tea, water
Oversized portions Large meals make vomiting more likely Jumbo, loaded, platter, bottomless, family-style Appetizer, lunch portion, half order
Carbonated drinks Can upset the stomach and add bloating Soda, sparkling, fountain drink, beer Still water, herbal tea
Alcohol May worsen nausea and acid reflux Cocktails, margarita pitchers, bottomless mimosas One drink with food, or none
Spicy food Can worsen reflux and an upset stomach Hot, spicy, diablo, buffalo, nashville hot, extra hot Mild, herbed, citrus or garlic seasoning

Why do greasy and fried foods make GLP-1 nausea worse?#

Fat takes longer to digest, and on a GLP-1 your stomach already empties more slowly. The 2025 joint advisory from four obesity and nutrition societies says avoiding large or high-fat meals can help with GI symptoms, and the Mayo Clinic Diet lists avoiding "high-fat, rich meals like fried foods" as a nausea tip.

Restaurants are full of hidden fat: fried appetizers, buttery steaks, cream sauces and cheese-covered everything. The fix is usually the cooking method. Ask for grilled chicken instead of crispy, salmon without the butter sauce, or vegetables steamed instead of sautéed. Words like smothered, loaded and au gratin usually mean extra fat too.

Do sweet foods and big portions make GLP-1 nausea worse?#

Yes, both can. The Cleveland Clinic lists food and drinks with added sugar, like soda, juice, cakes and cookies, among foods to limit on Ozempic, noting that sugary drinks can cause GI upset. Very sweet desserts and drinks can be hard to tolerate on a GLP-1.

Portion size may matter even more. The joint advisory notes that vomiting is more likely with large meals, and both the Mayo Clinic Diet and the Cleveland Clinic recommend smaller meals. A typical restaurant entrée is sized for a normal appetite, not a GLP-1 one. Ordering an appetizer or half portion, or boxing half before you start, is often the single biggest help.

Do carbonated drinks, alcohol and spicy food make GLP-1 nausea worse?#

They can. A Cleveland Clinic endocrinologist notes that high-fat foods, fried foods and carbonated beverages can all cause upset stomach and worsen nausea, as can large meals.

Alcohol "may worsen nausea and gastroesophageal reflux with GLP-1 therapy and should be minimized," according to the joint advisory. Spicy foods such as hot sauce and hot peppers are on the Cleveland Clinic's list of foods to limit, and the Mayo Clinic Diet lists spicy, acidic and fried foods, caffeine, chocolate and alcohol among things that may worsen reflux. Not everyone reacts to all of these, so notice which ones bother you.

What should you order instead when you're nauseous on a GLP-1?#

Order a small portion of plain, lower-fat food: grilled or steamed protein, broth-based soup, plain rice or a baked potato, and simple vegetables. The Mayo Clinic Diet also suggests cool, bland foods and avoiding foods with strong odors.

Gentle restaurant choices:

  • Broth-based soups: chicken noodle, wonton, miso or tom yum without extra chili.
  • Plain grilled protein: chicken, fish or shrimp without heavy sauce.
  • Simple starches: steamed rice, a plain baked potato, toast or crackers.
  • Eggs: scrambled or poached eggs, or egg white bites.
  • Fruit: a fruit cup instead of dessert.

How you eat matters too. Eat slowly, stop at the first sign of fullness, sip water through the day instead of drinking a lot with the meal, and don't lie down right after eating. How can you spot heavy dishes on a restaurant menu?#

Scan the menu with Menu Scan AI to see the calories, protein, carbs and fat of each dish before you order. A dish with a lot of fat and calories for a small portion is the kind to skip or share on a queasy day.

Menu Scan AI works on any restaurant menu, including independent places that publish no nutrition. It estimates protein, calories and macros for each dish, so you can pick a smaller, protein-first meal that fits a GLP-1 appetite. You can choose a GLP-1 goal when you set it up. It's free to download; the listing says an annual subscription is required for full access, including menu scanning.

Frequently asked questions#

Can soda make GLP-1 nausea worse?#

Carbonated drinks can. A Cleveland Clinic endocrinologist lists carbonated beverages alongside high-fat and fried foods as things that can cause upset stomach and worsen nausea on GLP-1s. Still water or unsweetened tea are gentler choices.

When should I talk to my doctor about GLP-1 nausea?#

Talk to your doctor if nausea or vomiting is severe or persistent, if you can't keep fluids down, or if you notice signs of dehydration such as dizziness or very little urine. The Wegovy, Zepbound and Mounjaro labels note that vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration.
