What Should You Order at Restaurants on Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro?
What to order on Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro at American, Mexican, Italian, Asian, Mediterranean, steakhouse and breakfast spots, with protein-first picks.
The short answer
On Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, order a small dish built around grilled, baked or steamed protein, such as fajitas, grilled fish, chicken souvlaki, sashimi, a petite steak or eggs, and eat the protein first. Skip or share fried, creamy and oversized plates. Appetizer portions, half orders and boxing half your meal right away make most menus work.
The menu hasn't changed, but you have. On Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro you might be full after a third of a plate, and a rich dish that used to be a treat can sit heavily for hours. So the question at the table isn't "what sounds good?" anymore. It's "what can I finish that's actually worth eating?"

What is the best thing to order at a restaurant on a GLP-1?#
The best order is a modest portion of lean protein with vegetables and a small amount of starch. When your appetite is small, protein should come first, because it's the part of the meal that's hardest to make up later.
A 2025 joint advisory from four obesity and nutrition organizations notes that targets of 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight per day have been proposed during active weight loss, or a simpler 80 to 120 g a day. Split across three or four meals, that's roughly 20 to 40 g per meal. The same advisory says avoiding large or high-fat meals can help with stomach side effects.
Appetite really does drop. In a 2017 study of semaglutide, the drug behind Ozempic and Wegovy, people ate 24% less across a day of test meals than on placebo and showed a lower preference for high-fat foods. Tirzepatide, the drug in Mounjaro and Zepbound, also slows digestion: its FDA label says it delays gastric emptying. A smaller stomach budget means each dish has to do more work.
Three rules cover almost every menu:
- Pick a protein you can see: chicken, fish, shrimp, lean steak, eggs, tofu or beans, cooked grilled, baked, steamed, poached or seared.
- Shrink the plate: an appetizer, lunch portion, half order or shared entrée, or box half before you start.
- Keep the extras light: sauces on the side, vegetables instead of fries, one piece of bread instead of the basket.

Lead with a grilled or steamed protein and treat the starch as optional. This table lists protein-first picks and the dishes to skip or share at the most common restaurant types.
| Cuisine | Protein-first picks | Skip or share |

What should you order at an American restaurant or burger place?#
Order a grilled chicken sandwich or a single-patty burger and swap the fries for a side salad, fruit or vegetables. A single patty gives you real protein without the grease load of a double bacon cheeseburger, and you can leave half the bun if you fill up.
Diners and grills often have a cup of chili or a grilled chicken plate. Both are good, smaller choices. If wings are the only option, ask whether they come grilled or naked, and skip the creamy dipping sauce.
What should you order at a Mexican restaurant on Wegovy?#
Fajitas are the easiest win: grilled chicken, steak or shrimp with peppers and onions, plus one or two tortillas. Ask for salsa and pico de gallo instead of queso and sour cream, and skip the chip basket or take a few chips and push it away.
Burrito bowls also work well. Ask for half rice, add beans for fiber, and box half before you start. Chicken soft tacos are a naturally small portion. For chain-specific numbers, our high-protein restaurant meals for GLP-1 users ranks Chipotle and other chains by protein per calorie.
What should you order at an Italian restaurant on Mounjaro?#
Choose grilled fish or chicken with vegetables, or a half portion of pasta in a tomato-based sauce such as marinara or pomodoro with grilled chicken on the side. Tomato sauces are lighter than cream, butter or cheese sauces like Alfredo, carbonara or vodka sauce.
Minestrone or a small salad with grilled shrimp makes a good starter, and sometimes it's the whole meal. Take one piece of bread, not the basket.
What should you order at Asian restaurants on a GLP-1?#
At Japanese restaurants, sashimi, a simple roll, edamame and miso soup give you protein in small, easy portions. At Chinese and Thai restaurants, look for steamed or stir-fried chicken, shrimp or tofu with vegetables, chicken satay, or a broth soup like tom yum or wonton, with a small scoop of steamed rice on the side.
Skip anything described as tempura, crispy, sweet and sour or orange, which usually means battered, fried and sugary. Ask for sauce on the side so you control how much you eat.
What should you order at Mediterranean and Greek restaurants?#
Order a chicken or steak souvlaki plate, grilled fish, or a Greek salad topped with chicken. These cuisines lean on grilling, so lean protein is easy to find.
Lentil soup is a good protein and fiber starter. Keep hummus and pita to a few bites, and ask for salad instead of fries or a second scoop of rice.
What should you order at a steakhouse on Ozempic?#
Order the smallest cut on the menu, usually a petite filet or a 6 to 8 oz sirloin, with steamed or grilled vegetables. Shrimp cocktail is one of the best starters anywhere: high protein, low fat and small.
Steakhouse portions are big and side dishes are rich. Share the potato or skip it, and box half the steak if you're full. A large fatty ribeye is the kind of heavy meal that's more likely to leave you uncomfortable.
What should you order for breakfast or brunch on a GLP-1?#
Eggs are the anchor: two eggs any style, an omelet with vegetables, or an egg white scramble, with fruit or a slice of toast. Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are also high-protein and easy on a small appetite.
Pancake stacks, French toast, chicken and waffles and biscuits and gravy are large, sweet or heavy, so share them if you want a taste. Brunch cocktails add alcohol and sugar; a coffee or water is the easier choice.
How do you order when you can only eat a few bites?#
Order the smallest version of the dish and eat the protein first, then vegetables, then starch if you still want it. If you're full after the protein, you've already eaten the most useful part of the meal.
- Ask for a lunch or half portion, even at dinner. Many kitchens will do it.
- Order two appetizers instead of an entrée, such as shrimp cocktail and a side salad, or soup and chicken skewers.
- Box half immediately so you're not tempted to keep going past full.
- Watch the menu words. Fried, crispy, creamy, smothered and loaded usually mean heavy. Our guide to restaurant foods that make GLP-1 nausea worse covers which ones to watch for.
This is general nutrition guidance, not medical advice. Your needs depend on your health, your medication and how you're feeling, so talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian about the right protein target and meal plan for you.
Which app helps you decide what to order on a GLP-1?#
Menu Scan AI is built for exactly this moment. Scan any restaurant menu with your phone and it estimates the protein, calories, carbs and fat of each dish before you order, so you can spot the protein-first option that fits a smaller appetite. You can choose a GLP-1 goal when you set it up, and it works at independent restaurants that publish no nutrition at all. It's free to download; the listing says an annual subscription is required for full access, including menu scanning.
Frequently asked questions#
What should I eat at a restaurant on Ozempic?#
Order a small dish built around grilled, baked or steamed protein, such as fajitas, grilled fish, chicken souvlaki, sashimi or eggs, and eat the protein first. Skip or share fried, creamy and oversized plates, and box half if the portion is large.
What is the best thing to order at a Mexican restaurant on Wegovy?#
Chicken, steak or shrimp fajitas with one or two tortillas, salsa and pico de gallo are an easy pick. A burrito bowl with half rice, beans and grilled chicken also works well. Skip queso, chimichangas and the bottomless chip basket.
Can you eat steak on Mounjaro?#
Yes. A petite filet or a 6 to 8 oz sirloin with vegetables is a good high-protein choice. Large fatty cuts and rich sides like creamed spinach or loaded potatoes are heavier and harder to finish on a small appetite.
How much protein should I eat at each meal on a GLP-1?#
A 2025 joint advisory notes daily targets of about 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of body weight, or 80 to 120 g a day, have been proposed during active weight loss. Spread over three or four meals, that's roughly 20 to 40 g each. Ask your doctor or a registered dietitian what fits you.
Should I order an appetizer instead of an entrée on Ozempic?#
Often, yes. Protein appetizers like shrimp cocktail, chicken skewers, sashimi or a cup of chili are closer to the portion many people can finish on a GLP-1. Two protein appetizers or an appetizer plus a side salad can replace a full entrée.
